Health and Social Care gives students the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. The curriculum develops key skills that prove aptitude in health and social care such as interpreting data to assess an individual’s health. By learning key concepts, students gain an understanding of the process that underpins effective ways of working in health and social care, such as designing a plan to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing. Through learning and understanding concepts of care values attitudes and developing core skills students have the opportunity to progress within the Health and Social Care employment sector.
How is Health and Social Care Assessed?
Four BTEC assignments, are completed in lessons and at home as a written document on Microsoft Word. One of the assignments requires a role play to be assessed by the teacher where students show they can demonstrate care values. Each assignment is worth 15% of the course. Assignments make up 60% in total. There is an exam sat in the February of year 11 on health and well-being. This is worth 40% of the qualification.
The KS4 Curriculum
Students in KS4 at Monk’s Walk will follow the Pearson Level 2 BTEC Technical award. There are four different assignments on Human lifespan and development, dealing with life events, health and social care services and barriers to accessing these and the health and social care values. Students will have to carry out a role play to show they understand and can demonstrate the health and social care values. Students will then learn about health and well being, the factors affecting this and learn how to write an effective health and well being plan for the examined unit.
