Geography and Travel & Tourism

Back

Our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire in students a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Students will be equipped with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Over time, students growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. We hope that through learning Geography all our students will not only understand the world around them but will want to make positive changes in the future to tackle some of the most important issues of our time.

What is it like to study Geography at Monk's Walk School?

Throughout key stage 3, 4 and 5, the geography department aims to build on pupils’ geographical understanding. The sequence of our curriculum enables pupils to build on existing knowledge and deepen their understanding of the world. The key concepts include human and physical processes, place and space, sustainability, environmental interaction as well as cultural understanding and diversity.

Throughout student’s time at Monk’s Walk pupils will revisit these key disciplinary concepts and build on their knowledge enabling them to tackle complex analysis of the discipline, develop their practical skills as a geographer and become more aware as global citizens.

How is Geography Assessed?

  • At KS3 students are assessed using pathway descriptor tasks during and at the end of topics. These are in the form of both short and longer written pieces of work and used by teachers to form a judgement of the progress students are making. This progress information reflects the work completed in recent assessments alongside the work they complete in class.
  • At KS4 & KS5 students are assessed using mid and end of unit assessments taken from the AQA syllabus. Throughout the course, students are given the opportunity to work on their exam technique by completing regular exam questions.
  • At KS4 & KS5 students also complete mock examinations so that they go through the full examination process. These are placed at different stages of the course so that students are questioned on the knowledge and skills that they have built over time.
