Who is eligible to apply for 16-19 Bursary Funding?

The 16 to 19 Bursary is targeted towards those young people considered most in need of financial support.

Discretionary bursary: which institutions award to meet the individual needs, for example, help with the cost of transport, meals, books, clothing, and equipment.

Discretionary Bursary

Students can apply for a Discretionary Bursary if they are:

  • Aged at least 16 and under 19 on 31 August 2023
  • Meet the residency requirements – the school will be able to confirm this
  • Qualify for Free School Meals (FSM)

Please see the MWS Bursary Application Form for guidance on the evidence required to confirm household income. Other factors are also taken into consideration when awarding the discretionary bursary include student distance from school and the number of siblings in the household.

Examples of ways in which the discretionary bursary can help include financial support with transport, books, trips, meals, exam re-sits and open days.

Exact support requirements are discussed on a 1-1 basis with students in their first financial support meeting following their bursary application.

How do you apply for the 16 to 19 Bursary?

You can complete an application form for the 16-19 Bursary which can be obtained at the link at the bottom of this page, or requested from the Sixth Form Office by email: sixthsupport@monkswalk.herts.sch.uk or by calling 01707 322846 Ext 305.

You will need to complete the application in full and provide the evidence requested.

Please return completed application forms to Sixth Form Student Support Officers.

How does Monk’s Walk School assess applications and allocate 16-19 Bursary funding?

Every application is taken on a case-by-case basis, using household income along with other factors to award bursary status. Following the initial application, a student finance support meeting with a member of the Sixth Form will take place where the level of need and support is discussed. Support available is dependent on meeting agreed targets of attendance and behaviour criteria.

When is the deadline for bursary application?

The deadline for initial applications each year is 30 September. This is for us to assess financial need across the Sixth Form and plan finances for the year. However, we do consider bursary applications throughout the year. Students also need to apply every academic year for the bursary fund.
