Sociology

Back

The Sociology curriculum contributes to student’s education by providing pupils with a broad and actionable education, applicable to a variety of career paths. The Sociology curriculum aims to equip students with the appropriate knowledge and skills needed to be able to understand and explain the causes of human behaviour and the impact of this behaviour on wider society. There is a clear progression between years to ensure that all pupils develop knowledge of sociological principles, so they can think analytically and reach logical conclusions based on scientific evidence.

Mrs J Munoz - Head of Sociology

What is it like to study Sociology and Monk's Walk School?

Sociology aims to develop students understanding of human life, social groups, societies, and the human world. It provides a solid introduction to social relations, social institutions, and social divisions.

Sociology trains pupils to answer the ‘what,’ ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about human societies and develop critical and evaluative skills.

How is Sociology Assessed?

At KS5 the course is assessed by exams (there is no coursework). This is a linear qualification and will be studied over two years, with all assessments for all modules at the end of the course. Assessments employ a variety of question types, including short answer and extended writing/essays, which target:

 • knowledge and understanding

 • application

 • analysis and evaluation.
