English - KS4

The KS4 Curriculum

The KS4 English curriculum is taught to the AQA Specification. All students are entered for both English Language and Literature. English is taught as an integrated subject throughout Years 10 and 11, with the Language and Literature units designed to support and complement each other.

Students will study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. These include a collection of ‘Power and Conflict' poetry, the play ‘Macbeth’, the novel ‘A Christmas Carol’, and a modern prose text: either ‘Animal Farm’ or ‘Lord of the Flies’. In addition to this, students will also study how to adapt their own writing for a range of purposes, such as to describe, narrate, explain and argue.

There is a separate ‘Spoken Language’ endorsement which involves students preparing and delivering a brief presentation to their peers. Students are all guided through this process and given lots of advice and support.

There are four exams in total at the end of the course. There is no coursework.
