The KS5 Curriculum

At KS5, we offer three courses:

A Level Maths

We offer the OCR course, Mathematics A which covers Pure, Statistics and Mechanics content. Students will learn the skills required for future studies in STEM based subjects, including advanced trigonometry and calculus, as well as statistical methods and analytical skills which would be useful in other future studies or employment. Mathematics A Level is highly regarded by universities and employers.

The course is assessed by 3 papers at the end of the course, assessing material covered over all two years of study.

Year 12

Year 13

Mathematical Studies
We offer the AQA Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies as a one year course. This course is equivalent to an AS Level and teaches financial and statistical skills. This course is ideal for students who are studying business and social science-based subjects and aren't already studying mathematics.

The course is assessed by 2 papers sat at the end of Year 12.

Year 12

A Level Further Maths

We offer the OCR course, Further Mathematics A as an option on top of the regular A-Level Maths. The Further Maths course has compulsory Pure content, but also has a variety of optional modules which we choose each year tailored to the needs of the class. The Pure content includes working with complex numbers, differential equations, but also extends Pure content from the regular A Level course such as vectors. Optional modules in the past have included studying Algorithms and Graph theory and further study in Mechanics. Further Maths is essential for anyone wishing to study Mathematics beyond the sixth form, and would also support further Physics, Engineering and Computer Science study.

The course is assessed by 4 exams sat at the end of Year 13 (not including the 3 exams sat for the regular A Level). At Monk's Walk School, our further maths class is taught the regular A Level Maths accelerated through Year 12 before starting the Further Maths specification.
